FAQ About Where to Stay in Budapest

What is the Best Area to Stay in Budapest for First-Time Visitors?

I would say that for a first time, District V would probably be the best area to stay. It’s literally so close to all the main highlights of Budapest. This area has great access to a variety of restaurants and cafés and another benefit is that you’re not wasting time on public transport getting around the city.

Is it Better to Stay in Buda or Pest Area?

I would say Pest is the ‘better’ side if convenience is your main priority. This is where you’ll find most of the amenities, restaurants, cafés, nightlife, and a large share of Budapest’s main highlights, so it makes exploring the city a lot easier.

That said, definitely don’t rule out Buda. It’s stunning, feels definitely more historic, and you’ll probably spend a good chunk of your trip here anyway. This is the side where you’ll find many of the city’s most historic sights and some of the greatest views over Budapest.

Where Should I Stay in Budapest for a Weekend Getaway?

Once again, District V would be my go-to choice. It’s super central, easy to get around from, and you won’t lose precious sightseeing time traveling back and forth across the city.

You’ll also have a variety of options right on your doorstep if we’re talking about cafés, restaurants and even public transport, which makes everything feel a lot more practical.

What is the Best Area to Stay in Budapest on a Budget?

I would recommend staying in District VIII if you’re traveling Budapest on a budget. It’s just a little outside of Districts V and VII, which means you’ll be close to all the action, but you have to go there on foot or by public transport.

Is the Jewish Quarter a Good Place to Stay?

The Jewish Quarter, also known as District VII, is another great area to stay in Budapest. It’s especially popular for its nightlife, with the city’s famous ruin bars, lively streets, and numerous places to eat and drink all packed into one neighborhood.

It also sits right next to District V, so you’re still close to some of the best restaurants, cafés, and major sights right in the middle of the center. Since everything is within easy reach, you can discover a lot on foot without constantly relying on public transport, which is a big plus for a short stay and will definitely save you some bucks.

Is Budapest a Walkable City?

If you’re staying in District V, VI, or VII, you probably won’t need public transport nearly as much as you’d expect. All three areas are nicely connected to central Budapest, with many of the city’s main sights, restaurants, cafés, and neighborhoods within comfortable walking distance.

That means more time actually exploring the city and less of wasting valuable time figuring out which tram or metro line you need next.

How Many Days Do you Need in Budapest?

You could definitely see many of Budapest’s main highlights in two days, but I’d personally recommend staying for at least three or four days if your schedule allows it.

That extra time gives you the chance to go beyond the obvious sights, explore a few different neighborhoods, slow things down a little, and experience a bit more of what makes this city so diverse.

My Final Thoughts on the Best Area to Stay in Budapest

There are a lot of places to choose from in Budapest, not just hotels, but districts and locations as well. However, I truly think that if you’re staying in one of the five mentioned districts, you can’t get it wrong.

All the areas are close to the center, close to the city’s best highlights, and even close to all amenities. One thing is certain: this city knows how to keep you entertained.

There’s a lot packed into this place, which makes it a fun European destination to discover. You can read more on that in my article about the best things to do in Budapest.
