For a small town in the Algarve coastal line there are a lot of hidden secrets to uncover in Tavira. I’ve been lucky enough to spend several months here over the last couple of years and can honestly call it my favorite place in the Algarve.
I love how the town is still authentic, hasn’t turned into a tourism hotspot (yet) and even seems to be one of the go-to places for locals to spend their summer. And if locals come here all the time, it must be good, right?
Since it’s in the Algarve, you’ll be close to other hotspots like, Lagos, Portimão, Faro and many more, but in my opinion Tavira tops them all. Especially since this place is still so authentically Portuguese.
If you enjoy a chilled vibe, love to explore the Portuguese culture, and would like to truly relax in the Algarve, Tavira might be your next destination. But what Things to Do in Tavira are actually worth it?

So, if you’re planning a trip to the Algarve, I’d recommend spending a couple days in Tavira and checking out the Best Things to Do in Tavira below.
#1. Explore Tavira Old Town
Probably the most fun thing to do is to just wander around the old center. You’ll be wandering in between cute little Portuguese streets, across the river on the Old Roman Bridge and Praça da República (the main town square) as well.

Since Tavira is quite small you’ll only need an hour or two if you’re hopping from shop to shop in old town to truly see everything. As it’s very walkable, you’ll be able to make stops wherever you go. I highly suggest taking a coffee break at the river to enjoy the views, I’ve always love to sit down for a while seeing people walk by.
#2. Walk across the bridge over the Gilão River
It might sound a bit trivial, but walking across to Old Roman Bridge to get a good view of the river and town is actually a fun thing to do. I loved going for a walk by nighttime and crossing the bridge from one busy side of the center to the other. It’s always lively during the night and a fun spot to go people watching as well!

#3. Climb to Tavira Castle
Set above the historic center, Tavira Castle is one of the best places to get spectacular looks over the town. The surviving walls and towers hint at Tavira’s long Moorish and medieval past, while the small garden inside makes the castle feel very fresh and modern.

The real highlight is the view: from the walls, you can look across Tavira’s rooftops, center, and surrounding salt flats. It’s probably the best sight over town you can get!
#4. Visit Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo
Just beside Tavira Castle, Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo is one of the town’s most important historic churches. It was built after the Christian reconquest on the site of a former mosque and has been rebuilt several times over the centuries.
Inside, you’ll find a beautiful interior and the tombs of knights linked to the conquest of Tavira. Its location also makes it an easy stop while exploring the Castle area as it’s right beside each other. I really like going inside historic churches to see the murals and ceiling paintings as well to learn more about the town’s history, and this one tells a long story.
#5. See Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Ondas
Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Ondas is one of Tavira’s most beautiful churches, especially if you enjoy decorative interiors. From the outside, it is pretty basic, but inside you’ll find beautiful paintings and murals depicting religious scenes, along with richly carved details. It is small so it’s only a quick visit, but it’s definitely worth your time if you ask me.

#6. Relax around Praça da República
After you’re done seeing all the historical and cultural highlights of the town, it’s time to sit down for a drink at the town’s main square. You’ll find a couple of cute bars here as well as the town’s podium which is used at night for shows.
#7. Walk along the Gilão riverfront
Like I said earlier, I absolutely love walking along the riverfront. There are plenty of food and drink spots here to sit down and relax. Or you could even take you own food and drinks and sit down on one of the benches. During high tide you can see some boats passing by as well.

#8. Take the boat to Ilha de Tavira
An absolute must when you’re visiting Tavira is to take the boat to the island. It leaves from the middle of the center, goes through the Ria Formosa and brings you to Ilha de Tavira in about 20 minutes. It’s one of three ways to get to the island. The other two are taking the ferry from the end of the pier or going by private boat.

The ferry costs only €2-€2,70 for a roundtrip and goes every hour. Make sure to check the schedule to ensure you won’t strand on the island after a relaxing beach day!
#9. Spend a day on Tavira Island
If you’re already taking the ferry to the island, you might as well spend the day there! It’s full of fun beach clubs (I love Xiri) and bars to spend the day at. You can easily rent a couple of sunbeds for a day for about 15 euros.

After that you’ll be able to enjoy the sea, sun, and beach for the full day. Once again don’t forget the time schedule to take the boat back to mainland!
#10. Explore the Ria Formosa
Go from Tavira town center to the island and you’ll be immediately greeted by the Ria Formosa, and exactly that ferry is the perfect place to explore the Ria Formosa. It takes about 20 minutes, but you’ll be having amazing views of the Ria Formosa throughout.
If you want to explore it a bit better, you can just take a tour or rent a boat from town and explore by yourself!
#11. See Tavira’s salt pans
An absolute must-see if you’d ask me. Tavira still has official and traditional salt pans that produce official and authentic pink salt. It’s a timeless tradition that has been shaped by the town proximity to the sea, and it’s very unique to see and interesting learn more about it.

You’re able to go on a guided tour here, see the people working on the salt pans and learn more about this traditional job. The people working here take real pride in their job, and you’ll notice that immediately.
#12. Try local food
What’s a visit to Portugal without trying local food, right? Well, in Tavira you’re in luck as the town is filled with traditional food spots, from tapas to real Mediterranean fish restaurants, you’ll find them all over town.
Something truly local would be tuna, octopus or anchovies, so make sure to try those when you’re visiting a restaurant in town!
#13. Visit the municipal (food) market
If you walk all the way down the riverfront, you’ll find the town’s local food market. This is a great place to get fresh groceries in the morning or sit down for a drink with some really good tapas. It’s not the biggest market, but it’s certainly worth a visit whilst you’re there. I always loved getting fresh veggies here to cook with.
Things to do near Tavira
Since the Algarve is well connected by main roads, you’ll be able to make day trips to towns close by, such as Olhão, Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira, and Faro. And as you’re only 25 minutes from the Spanish border, you’ll also be able to spend a day in Spain if you’d like to.
Where to stay in Tavira
I would suggest staying somewhere in the center of Tavira. There are plenty of hotels and other accommodations to find around and this will give you the perfect home base for your trip in Tavira.
How to get to Tavira
The easiest way to get to town is either by car (taxi) or by train. There are direct train connections from Faro airport, so that makes it a bit easier. The train stops a bit outside of the center, but it’s still doable to walk to your accommodation from the train station.
Getting around in Tavira
Since Tavira is quite a small town it’s easy to get around on foot. You could walk most of the center in 30 minutes or less, so if you’ve got accommodation in the center, you won’t have the need for a car or any other vehicle.

Best time to visit Tavira
I would say just before or after peak summer, as local tourism is lower as well during these months. During this time, you’ll get to explore the town without the big crowds. This also frees up more tables at the best restaurants in town so that’s a big plus as well.
