What’s a coastal town without a good beach, right? Well, you’re in luck as Tavira has access to numerous amazing beaches. From family beaches, to ‘party’ beaches, Tavira really has it all, and in this blog I’ll take you through all of the best beaches in Tavira Portugal.
Spoiler alert: they’re all really good and less crowded compared to other places in the Algarve! It truly depends on what you’re looking for, as Tavira has some of the Algarve’s most charming beaches around, at least that is if you ask me!

I’ve visited all of the beaches mentioned in this article, and can honestly tell you that some of them really surprised me.
Yes, some of them can be busy at certain times (especially during peak months like July and August), but most have the option to rent sun beds for a full day, which most of the time gives beach lovers more space. The best part, it’s not even that expensive!

Best Beaches in Tavira Portugal
1. Praia da Ilha de Tavira — Best Overall
Praia da Ilha de Tavira is the beach I’d recommend to most first-time visitors. It has that real Algarve feeling with its huge stretch of soft sand, plenty of space to spread out, and enough facilities nearby that you can easily spend the whole day here.

I love coming here either to set up my own little corner with towel, an umbrella and a cooler full of food and drinks or to rent one of the sunbeds and enjoy the nearby beach bars to grab something to drink or eat.
As I’ll mention a couple of times throughout this blog, you reach the beach by ferry, either from Tavira center or the pier, which makes the journey feel like part of the day out rather than just traveling to the beach. Once you arrive, there are restaurants, bars, toilets, showers and sunbed rentals close to the main access point.

It can get busy in summer, but the beach is so long that walking a little farther usually gives you much more space.
My favorite beach day starts by taking the ferry from the center of Tavira, crossing the Ria Formosa to the island, and then grabbing a sunbed at Xiri to really relax. For me, this is the best all-round option if you want a straightforward beach day with all the amenities nearby.
2. Praia do Barril — Best for Families and Something Different
Praia do Barril is one of the most memorable beaches around Tavira, because getting there is part of the experience. You can go there by taking the ferry from Tavira or by crossing the footbridge at Pedras d’El Rei. After that it’s just a walk across the sand until you find your spot.
Just like Tavira’s main beach, there are also restaurants, toilets, and other facilities close by, which makes Barril easy and accessible for families. The beach itself is huge, so while the main area can feel lively, you don’t need to walk far to find more space.
I’d choose Barril if you’re after a little more space and freedom than Tavira’s main beach offers. It takes slightly longer to reach, but that extra effort rewards you with a calmer beach setting and plenty of room to spread out, which makes it especially nice for families.
3. Praia da Terra Estreita — Best Quiet Beach
Praia da Terra Estreita is the beach I’d pick if you want to be somewhere calmer. It sits between the former two beaches, but without all the fuss as it’s a bit of a walk from both sides. There are a couple of facilities at the beach, including a beach bar, toilets and seasonal services, so don’t expect a full service like at the other beaches.
However, that’s also part of the appeal, as this beach will really forces you to go offline and switch off for a couple of hours. There’s not much to distract you here, which makes it perfect to enjoy a proper beach day and some sunshine!
4. Praia de Cabanas de Tavira — Best for Long Beach Walks
Praia de Cabanas is my favorite option if you want plenty of space and long walks. The beach sits across the lagoon from Cabanas de Tavira, and small boats make the short crossing from the village waterfront. Once there, you’ll find long stretches of beach that aren’t too busy, as most people tend to visit the other three beaches.

Cabanas itself is also a great place to return to after the beach, with restaurants and cafés along the waterfront. If your trip is mainly to chill, slow down and take it easy, visiting Cabanas could be the place you’re looking for.
Which Tavira Beach Is Best?
For me, Praia da Ilha de Tavira is the best, as it offers the most facilities, the little ferry ride to the island and overall the best beach. Yes, it may also be the busiest one, but that can easily be handled by renting a bed at Xiri Beach Club, or one of the other beach bars on the island.
I just love the sand at this beach, the vibes are immaculate, and if you’re early it can still be very, very chilled here. Also I just like Xiri here, it serves great drinks and food, has great sunbeds. And of course, some amazing parties from time to time, a must visit if you ask me.
Also the fact that it’s only 25 minutes (including the ferry) from the town centre is a big deal for me. This makes it very easy to just hop down to the centre, take the ferry and go to the beach for a couple of hours. I mean, who doesn’t love that, right?
Best beach in Tavira without a car
Once again, Praia da Ilha de Tavira since you’ll be able to get there with a simple 20 minute ferry ride. It’s by far the easiest beach to reach from Tavira town itself. And also the best one of course ;).
Quietest beach in Tavira
Praia da Terra Estreita is the one to go to if you’re looking for a peaceful time, you’ll have to walk down quite a bit from the main beach (Praia da Ilha de Tavira), however since most people don’t do that, it definitely will be more quiet on this one.
Best Tavira beach for restaurants and facilities
I know I’m starting to sound like a broken record, but once again: Praia da Ilha de Tavira. As Tavira’s main beach, it’s also the one with the most facilities, which makes it incredibly easy for a full beach day.
On your way from the ferry to the sand, you’ll pass the restaurants, cafés, toilets, and other amenities first. Once you arrive, you’ll immediately understand why I keep calling this the most convenient beach option around Tavira.
Once you reach the beach, you’ll also notice that most of the beach clubs are clustered around the entrance to Praia da Ilha de Tavira. That makes it by far the easiest option if you want a relaxed beach day with lunch, drinks, or even dinner just a few steps away from your sunbed.
How to Get to the Beaches in Tavira
Most of the beaches around Tavira are easy to reach by ferry followed by a short walk. Praia de Cabanas is the exception, as you’ll first need to make your way to the nearby village of Cabanas before taking the short boat crossing to the beach.
What to Bring to Tavira’s Beaches
You don’t really need to bring a lot, although the essentials are always good to bring. I would for sure take: sunscreen (SPF50!!!), water, snacks, a hat, an umbrella, cash or card, and maybe a layer if you’ll return late by ferry, as it get’s quite chilly in the evening.

Where to Stay for the Beaches

The choice is completely up to you, but after visiting all the beaches around Tavira, I’ve somehow always ended up choosing Praia da Ilha de Tavira.
